Local TV Matters?

So lately the "local" TV stations have been playing commercials/PSAs about how the "big cable companies" are taking money from them (and us) and not helping out at all. Those big cable companies are basically big meanies. It's quite sad, really.

I saw one commercial on CTV last Thursday that was basically a full-length music video (well... country music) about how the big cable companies are going to kill local tv ending with the message that we all should support local TV stations and local tv shows. It was quite powerful. Or rather, it would have been had they found a slightly better time to play the ad...

See, they played the ad at 6:57pm. At 6:56pm, at the end of the news, they played their full Thursday night schedule. It looked like this:
7PM - The Vampire Diaries
8PM - CSI
9PM - Grey's Anatomy
10PM - The Mentalist
11PM - CTV National News
11:30PM - CTV Local News
12:00AM - The Daily Show with Jon Stewart
12:30AM - The Colbert Report

Of those those shows, only the local news is, well... local. 30 minutes of their 360 minute prime-time evening is local. 60 minutes are Canadian. The next closest is 'The Vampire Diaries' in that one episode was shot in Vancouver (then relocated to Atlanta).

CTV - way to not only say that local TV doesn't really matter, but also that 'big cable companies' are far more entertaining. Kudos.

Don't get cocky CBC - you're not doing much better. 'Ghost Whisperer'? Really?

I really don't care who gets whatever money. The locals and cable companies can slug it out. If they propose to increase what my cost is for programming, they can keep it. I don't need TV that bad.

It's a Dog Eat Dog

I agree, let them slug it out. After all, it’s a capitalist world right? When one has the monopoly on the industry either someone else will come along and beat them or they get to keep it. There are winners and there are losers with every industry. No one said life was fair. If tv (which I don’t watch much of anymore) and the internet/phone/whatever gets too big for the pocketbook then I just cancel my service until I can afford to get it back. Simple as that.
Why worry so much about tv when there are other more important issues to consider. Like the fact that you are paying almost ½ your salary back to the government? Not only that, you are paying taxes on goods and services from you already taxed pay. Or the fact that it takes you 3 to 4 months of every year just to pay your deductions on your measly paycheque? Min wage is only around 9$ an hour; ever try to live on 9$ an hour? How about the sustainable (and EXTREMELY expensive) war on terrorism? One more, 90% of all Canadians will retire in poverty as there are very few jobs that still offer pensions. I can go on and on and on …. Tv? P l e a s e ….

Stop The TV Tax Now!

I hate the fact that Rogers is doing this to our local TV. They make enough money as it is and yet they want to charge us $10 more per month on something they don't even pay for??? Ridiculous! Cable bills are out of control and I'm glad that these commercials have been playing and I hope everyone stands up to their cable companies. Enough is enough!

Re: Stop The TV Tax Now!

Have you taken the time to even check with the CTRC? Do you know that Rogers, Bell, and the other providers have to carry local tv at their cost by law? There is an old saying, that goes along the lines of if you don't know what you are speaking of, do not speak.
Take the time to see. I will even send you a link to use. This will show you how the LOCAL STATIONS make money. http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/INFO_SHT/Bdt10.htm
This was done already to level the playing field.
Local TV stopped being local when A Channel, CTV, and Global bought up local staions.

Wow - so far no one has gotten the point of this post (at least, if they have, they're not the ones replying...).

Also, an addition to this post:

Recently I saw on the Comedy Network (a channel owned by CTV - thus, I guess technically "Local TV") play a commercial that was opposed to cable TV. Then IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING IT they played one AGAINST LOCAL TV.

Clean up house!

"Ask not what you can do for your government but rather what can your goverment do for you" LC
The government is demanding too much from its citizens! Ever since it started charging for service charges! Why do you think we pay taxes ? Income tax, property taxes & the big LIE the gst! This is not to mentioned ALL the other prexisting taxes! Time has come for people to realize and do something about this!
A few years back I became aware of a troubling fact while working for the city of ottawa. I learned that the federal government was stealing water from the city of ottawa, in the order of millions of dollars. It never appeared in the newspapers since it was settled out of court! This goes to what extent the government has gone corrupted and at all levels. The buck is just passed from one hand to the other( one party in power to the other). This is factual ! Astounding?
Let us not forget that a government that operates in a surplus implies that it is profiting from its citizens! This is the major reason come at the end of each fiscal year the government is in a frenzy to spend all of its budget in order to justify replenishing itself. But in the meanwhile it finds ways to find new taxes, increase prexisting ones & have the audacity to add service charges and then slap you with the BIG LIE the gst. When are people going to realize that time has come for ACTION!
While the 2 most important aspects of society
(Education & Medicare) are being are being overshadowed by government fallacies or better known as PROPAGANDA such narcotics and the war overseas!
pay the tv tax, I THINK NOT!

Unbelievable

If ctv, cbc, etc want more money I suggest they produce programming people actually want to watch rather than the garbage we now see that only gets air time to fulfill required "canadian content" rules. If this tax succeeds I will close my Bell satelite account, throw out my equipment and buy equipment and pirate satelite signals from US systems. I currently watch satelite TV "legally" but will change that in heartbeat to avoid paying these guys!
